VJQ, the Vocal Jazz Quartet, is a Williamsport, PA-based group formed by musicians seeking to bring the vocal jazz genre to the Central Pennsylvania region.
The group’s initial impetus was to complement a local instrumental group, “Jazzin’ ”, at the yearly Community Theatre jazz concerts in Williamsport. As a result, the quartet’s popularity and following has grown tremendously over the years. Performing a wide spectrum of vocal jazz, VJQ’s repertoire includes many standards, blues, Latin jazz, funk, swing, and pop selections. They sing original arrangements as well as charts made popular by groups such as The Manhattan Transfer, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and the New York Voices. The quartet is backed by an instrumental trio comprised of Williamsport’s finest jazz musicians.
Since its beginnings in 1994 VJQ’s personnel has remained virtually unchanged. Lucy Henry is the group’s soprano, and Cathy Byham sings alto, (although, to tell the truth, they frequently switch places!). Craig Weaver sings the tenor part, and Tom Shellenberger is the bass. Lucy and Tom are former music teachers from the Williamsport area, while Craig is still teaching social studies and plays guitar in several area pop and jazz groups. Cathy is a musical theatre grad whose vocal/piano expertise is in great demand throughout the area.
The Vocal Jazz Quartet has performed at many venues over the years, including conventions, banquets, parties, churches, jazz festivals, the Little League World Series, and many other events too numerous to list here.
First and foremost, VJQ’s mission is to offer only the best vocal jazz to audiences of all ages.
It's our experience that VJQ provides the best vocal jazz in town, and all around town.
The Vocal Jazz Quartet is a treasure in our regional arts community. ...an act that delights all ages and their show doesn't stop until everyone is smiling.
...a fun and energetic performance of a wonderful variety of jazz. Come see and hear VJQ.
